The Look

Beauty from the Oscars

This years 87th academy awards saw a mass of beautifully dressed women with more than impeccable makeup. Here are 6 of my favourite looks of the evening.

Margot Robbie wearing Saint Laurent

Margot glowed on the red carpet thanks to flawless skin, perfectly groomed brows, and a vibrant, creamy red lip. Products used to achieve this look were – Hourglass Panoramic Long Wear Lip Pencil  and Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick, both in Raven, for the pop of matte orange-red I just adore. Her flawless skin and nearly-naked eyes set the stage for that electric lip to steal the show. Enviable up-groomed brows, and a blunt side-parted bob polished the whole look off perfectly.

Dakota Johnson wearing Saint Laurent

Dakota eschewed any shades of grey in favour of red tones, including her soft shadow, dewy lip, and perfect ponytail. Bold brows, a soft smudgy eye, and creamy porcelain skin flattered her featured. But what really perfected the look was the matte cherry-red lip that was perfectly matched to her dress. Top marks for the IT-girl of the moment.

Sienna Miller wearing Oscar de la Renta

Sienna Miller is no stranger to epic red carpet moments, but the star looked more stunning than ever with slick-backed hair, a bronze smoky eye, and the perfect matte pink lip at the hands of Charlotte Tilbury. This is perhaps my favourite look of the bunch. I just can’t get over the perfectly winged out eyeshaddow and glowing skin. Charlotte Tilbury used her Goddess Skin Clay Mask to shrink pores and tighten the skin before layering on her Magic Cream and Wonderglow , to hydrate and create a soft-focus.

Emma Stone wearing Elie Saab Haute Couture

Everyone was waiting for Emma Stone to make her grand appearance—and she didn’t disappoint, making a coral lip look so good with her beaded Elie Saab gown. The half-up, wavy hair style was reminiscent of 1920’s glamour and polished the look to perfection. To recreate the look try Chanel’s Precision Lip definer in Rouge Candy and Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick in Tulip.

Keira Knightley wearing Valentino

The glowing mum-to-be looked breathtakingly romantic with soft, loose waves and a barely-there makeup look. Keira’s ethereal look was finished with perfectly (enviable) groomed brows and a rosy lip, courtesy of Chanel Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Marie.

Reese Witherspoon wearing Tom Ford

Reese was sporting a radiant, sexy, effortless look using Tom Ford products – Shade & Illuminate Highlighter & Shader Duet in Intensity One was used to define and sculpt the face, as well as Laura Mercier’s Faux Lash Mascara in Black and Brown for “a softer intensity” look. Reese opted for a simple glossy blow-dry and pink-nude lip on the red carpet. Get the look using Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour in Nude Rose.

What do you think – are these looks some of your favourites too?

Whistles Winter Wonderland

This year I’ve been lusting after most of the Whistles winter collection, the chunky knits, the dainty cami tops and the beautiful christmas clutch bags. But the pieces that have made it into my collection this year are simply never going to leave!

I’ve never been a jumper dress kind or girl, but these two effortless styles are definitely here for the long haul. With temperatures only just starting to drop in the UK, these are perfect teamed with tights, a pair of boots and a big fluffy scarf!

This Rib Front Cashmere Mix Dress in Pale Grey is the perfect piece to jazz up your winter wardrobe, it’s supersoft and a luxurious blend of wool and cashmere with a lovely ribbed front panel. The style has a round neck, long sleeves and a stepped hem. Team with a pair of boots, a fluffy scarf and a simple tailored coat. Gorgeous.

The other dress I’ve been loving for the past few weeks is the Ava Padded Neck Tunic Dress in Dark Grey – if you want to opt for style, comfort and warmth then this is the dress for you. An effortless, super soft knit, simply style with an oversized scarf and a pair of boots for an easy go-to daytime look. The unusual modern padded neck adds a little somethin’ extra to this dress making it perfect for the office or for a day out.

This Small Cracked Clutch in Navy is perfect for the festive party season! Add an injection of this metallic blue hue to you outfit – this premium leather clutch bag is crafted from a subtle textured cracked leather, to add depth and interest to any outfit. Featuring a zip opening, ideal to use for a small clutch in the evening, large enough to fit all your essentials.

Speaking of the party season, Whistles are totally on point with their party wear! Just look at this Cecil Sparkle Textured Cami in black – this classic cami style, with adjustable straps is reinterpreted with texture. Pair with slim, sleek tuxedo trouser or black skinny jeans for an enigmatic look. A matching skirt is also available for a full textured sparkle look!

I absolutely adore this Chay Lace Cropped Shirt in Electric Blue – Feminine and elegant, this cropped shirt is the ideal day to night piece. With exposed lace sleeves, and a subtle body underlay this is perfect for the party season too! Team with a pair of high waisted jeans and heels for ultimate glamour.

If I were a rich girl, I’d have this gorgeous Clean Longline Leather Biker in my collection, with intricate details, asymmetrical silver zips, off centre fastening and clean lines, this sophisticated take on the traditional biker is just perfect. I’ve been waiting for a long time to find a longline leather jacket, too bad it’s not within price range, for anyone! If you’re luck enough to have a similar piece in you collection then team this collarless style with a crisp white shirt and dark denim for a monochrome daytime look.

Are there any items you’ve had your eyes on for winter?

Autumn/Winter 2014 Beauty Trends

This year’s shows have seen berry hues take a back seat – not something that we’re used to for an Autumn/Winter season but the looks have been equally as beautiful and a little less cliché. If you’re a lipstick lover then this is perhaps not the year for you… eyes have taken the limelight this year with liquid latex applied to the lids at Dior, and extra long lashes donned at Rochas and Gucci. Despite some questionable looks gracing the catwalk the natural look still rings true as a sure favourite, either with a healthy, sporty, post-gym vibe with natural tousled wavy hair, or a strong, sculpted and defined bare-faced look. With regards to hair, think undone ballerina buns, plaits and gentle waves. Surely I’m not the only one that’s happy to see the slicked back, wet look trend disappear?

Delicate Beauty – Ballerina-chic was seen sported at Prada, Erdem and Diane von Furstenberg with undone wispy ballerina buns and lilac toned lids. Add in a touch of sheen to the lids and you’ll be sporting the same look at the girls on the catwalk – perhaps a more wearable option is to dust a nude, lilac or taupe shade all over the lids and pull your hair back into an undone chignon.

High Definition – Dust of your highlighters girls and boys because faces all over the catwalk have been sporting an ethereal glow for Autumn/Winter trends… Givenchy and Marc Jacobs’s girls were sculpted within an inch of their lives, proving to us that definition is a key trend that’s dominating the up-and-coming months. Pair with a taupe eyeshadow and you’re on to a winner with a flawless take on the neutral make-up trend. Contouring and highlighting all of the face’s natural definition was prominent on the catwalk – it’s a bonus that it’s an easy trend to translate to everyday wear. Products to reach for: Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Powder in Medium, Kevyn Aucoin Highlighter in Candlelight and L’Oreal Infallible eyeshadow in Bronzed Taupe.

Sports Luxe – Think a very masculine take on pared-back beauty – a look that’s never likely to disappear from the catwalk. This is an ideal look to perfect at home with healthy glowing skin, neat brows and minimal-effort hair. Sounds like a student’s dream… Designers like Stella McCartney, Isabel Marant and Victoria Beckham opted for this post-gym look that I’m sure will be seen replicated through most brands at some point this season.

Lashings of Lashes – Super long false lashes were sported by the girls walking for Versace, Rochas and Gucci, giving them a doll-like appearance whereas Prada and Topshop Unique opted for a clumpy, clogged mascara application to give a grungey feel to an otherwise pretty makeup look. Considering this year seems to be all about the eyes, most Paris shows opted for a mascara free look, giving the whole thing a sense of ‘undone’ beauty.

Plaits – Or should I say cornrows? Alexander McQueen and DKNY girls has their hair manipulated into cornrows to channel the urban grunge vibe – not something I think we’ll see people on the street sporting, but plaits were used more delicately elsewhere, with plaited pigtails at Marc by Marc Jacobs, braided buns at Dolce & Gabanna and woven ponytails at Fendi – a great way to amp-up your day to day look with minimal input needed throughout the day. Think, low maintenance glamour.

Colour – When you say Autumn/Winter you think muted down tones and berry hues, but not this year. Take inspiration from Chanel, Christian Dior and Burberry and you’ll be rocking a flash of colour on the lids all season, from electric blue graphic liner at Kenzo to purple flashes at Burberry, this is not the season to be afraid of colour on the lids. Want a wearable option – then go for a coloured liner to create a classic feline flick, opt for jewelled greens and purples and you’re on to a winner.

Holiday Beauty Look Book

Going on holiday is something I really look forward to – many people dread the idea of going barefaced pool side, but that’s not something that’s ever bothered me. In fact, it’s nice to be able to get up in the morning and not worry about putting your makeup on. But sometimes it’s nice to switch things up a bit, and especially when going on holiday with friends sometimes a bit of somethin’ somethin’ is needed to spruce things up a bit. So here’s a collaboration of 4 of my go-to looks that are holiday ready, and all the basics you’ll need to achieve them!

The Basics – On holiday, or in any sun exposure SPF is needed to protect the skin. Here’s a post dedicated to SPF’s just in case you missed it… my main favourites all get an airing, but my all time pick of the bunch… Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defence SPF 50.

Another holiday staple is lip balm – my favourite is the Supergoop! AcaiFusion Lip Balm SPF 30, with UV-blocking SPF 30, this is a ridiculously hydrating, creamy balm with no weird film or strange taste. Plus, the acai leaves a barely visible rose tint. And the best part? A shiny finish without a trace of stickiness.

I always look better when I’ve curled my eyelashes and brushed through my brows, and for those jobs I call on the Shu Uemura Eyelash Curlers and a spoolie. The Shu Uemura curler is considered the lash curler among top makeup artists, it grips firmly but squeezes gently to produce a lasting, natural-looking curl without breaking hairs.

Bare Faced = The Basics + Clear Brow Gel + Waterproof Mascara

This is perhaps the look I’ll be rocking the most often on my holiday this year. Only because I’m a water lover and find myself dipping in and out of the water, be it a pool or the sea, like a yo-yo. Because of that I call on my trusty DIOR Diorshow Iconic Extreme Waterproof Mascara in Chestnut. It’s so hard to find a good brown waterproof mascara, but I think I’ve finally done it – the compound at the heart of this waterproof formula brings weightlessness to the lashes thanks to its thickening, extra–hold latex polymers. It takes hold to another level and does a great job at staying put throughout the intense heat and pool dipping. Add in a slick of clear brow gel to set the eyebrows and you’re done, I like the one from Anastasia best as it offers the right amount of hold without making things go crispy.

Bold Lip = The Basics + Bare Faced + Bold Lipstick

This is one to crack out if you’re on holiday with the girls and want to feel fabulous. Nothing is better than a striking bold lip paired with toned down makeup – making it perfect for on holiday. You can make it matte or sheer, it works both ways. My personal favourites are NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Red Square, NARS Satin Lipstick in Casablanca or Niagara. No surprises there!

Striking Eye = The Basics + Bare Faced + Waterproof Eyeliner

A good look to work when you’re sight seeing, or mooching around. This look is probably the least pool friendly, but sometimes we have to make sacrifices for beauty! For this holiday appropriate look I like to do a bold feline flick with a good waterproof brown eyeliner – a good one to try is the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Dark Brown, the longevity is there, as well as the colour intensity – top marks!

Bronzed Goddess = The Basics + Bare Faced + Waterproof Bronzer + Waterproof Shaddow

When things start to get hot there’s nothing better than rocking the bronzed beach babe look. For that I suggest investing in a good waterproof bronzer like the Superficial Waterproof Bronzer from Hourglass – An extended-wear, waterproof bronzer that withstands high humidity and extreme moisture, it blends seamlessly onto skin to create a natural bronze colour. It’s oil-free and ridiculously long-wearing, Superficial is the go-to bronzer for swimming, outdoor activities, and the summer heat. I promise I don’t love it because it’s housed in the Hourglass signature 360° swivel compact!

Add in a bronzed eye look and you’re good to go! The new eyeshadow palette drop from Bobbi Brown is perfect for the job – the Surf and Sand Palette houses eight neutral shades that blend beautifully and mimic the shimmering texture of sandy beaches. It’s the perfect day-to-night palette with a range from soft nude to deep, rich browns. Perfect for any woman who wants a nude-meets-sultry eye that compliments sun-kissed skin (although the shadows in this palette look gorgeous year-round).

If you’re not up for rocking a shadow look then give the Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Eye Pencil in Bronze a go. It’s a lovely golden bronze colour and compliments a tan perfectly.

What look will you be rocking poolside?

No Makeup, Makeup

My staple, my go-to face, basically what I like to throw on daily perhaps switching up a lip colour or blush here and there and wearing mascara. Prepare not to be wowed, but to see the two products that have got the no makeup, makeup thing down.

Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector – Just in general. No particular shade… but the one pictured above is 01 – Rose Shimmer. I’d go as far to say that these are my favourite lip products ever. They may seem to make a pretty big dent for a lipgloss, but think a gloss, with colour, shine and nourishment that means that there’s never an opportunity where these guys don’t work. The two pinky hues are my favourite and at least one of them resides in my handbag at all times. They have the ‘my lips but better’ thing down, and that’s what makes them a great pick for a no makeup makeup day. These lip glosses have Shea Butter and Wild Mango in the formula to repair and soften the lips, whilst Vitamins A and E sneak in to reinforce the repairing action and protect against free radicals. At £17 a pop they’re a tad pricey for a lipgloss, but these are so worth it! Let’s just say I’m on my way to owning every. single. shade. Oops.

Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Powder SPF 15B20 and B40. There’s some long standing confusion over the function of these powders, but I like a bit of B40 round the edges of my face to give some much needed definition and B20 down the centre for that extra scrap of coverage for days when you need a little somethin’ somethin’ but really can’t be bothered. I’m not hugely into powder foundation products (and this certainly isn’t one of them…), but even I can accept that sometimes thing’s can get a bit shiny, so just to be safe, and to add a bit of coverage, a quick dusting can work wonders. Something that’s light with a hint of colour is what you’re getting here. Extra points because it comes with its own brush and mirror – and it’s so beautiful!

Wimbledon Wears

Im heading off to Wimbledon on Saturday night with the boy to join ‘The Queue’ for the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament tickets, and I’m so excited.

The 2014 Wimbledon Championships is a tennis tournament that is played on outdoor grass courts, it is the 128th edition of the Wimbledon Championships and the third Grand Slam event of the year. The boy is an avid tennis fan, and goes to Wimbledon nearly every year, so this time I can’t wait to join in with the fun and embrace the british tradition that is Wimbledon.

True to form, I’ve even planned my outfits for the two days.

Saturday night – Arrive late and set up camp!

Sunday –  Spend the day in ‘The Queue’ queuing  for tickets…

This calls for comfort, in the form of a LBD – this ASOS Skater dress with Wrap front is made from a lightweight stretch fabric and was a bargain at £25, great for the warmer weather we’ve been having, but also good for if it turns a bit cold. Paired with my & Other Stories Sunglasses and ASOS leather flat sandals this is a perfect lounge around outfit in fitting with the occasion.

To jazz this up a bit, I’ll be opting for an orangey peach lip courtesy of NARS Satin Lipstick in Casablanca.

Monday – Spend the day watching tennis and eating strawberries…

This is the day of the tennis we’ve queued up to get tickets for. Now I know many people will go a bit more casual, but my fashion sense is kind of far from casual. I like to dress up, and look sophisticated… so I’ll be opting for this T-Shirt Dress with Sheer Sleeve and Tuck Detail from ASOS teamed with my ZARA Long Blazer, ASOS Red Leather Flat Shoes, & Other Stopes glasses and the NARS lipstick again. Keeping the accessories simple.

I’m really looking forward to going to Wimbledon as it’s my first time attending the tournament, and experiencing ‘the queue‘ – pictures to follow!
